3 Valley Vegans (3VV) is a community group based in and around the upper Calder Valley in West Yorkshire. We are passionate about choosing options that are not dependent on animal-derived products in every area of our lives – and nowadays there is so much choice!

Every month, we hold an event of some kind to encourage and support all those who are interested in finding out the possibilities of veganism. Our events are usually free entry and include refreshments in the form of delicious creations from their keen cooks and bakers. We host activities throughout the Calderdale/Burnley/Rochdale area – look out for them!

Q: What sort of activities does 3 Valley Vegans put on?

A: We offer information or help in many ways such as:

  • eating out in the local area;
  • vegan shopping opportunities;
  • buying vegan items for the home and work;
  • choosing animal-friendly clothing or footwear.

We do this through our website, newsletter and social media channels, via informative and social activities, and by appearing at relevant local events.

Since January 2013 we have arranged a wide variety of events, the largest being the 3VV Fair in February 2017. Opened by the mayor, we hosted Todmorden’s first vegan fair, complete with stalls, films, talks, live music and art, and of course plenty of delicious food. The focus of the fair was to encourage people to try the Vegan Society’s 30-day vegan pledge, in exchange for support and a free goodie bag.

Other highlights include the two live music nights arranged for World Vegan Day in 2014 and 2017, our Big Veggie Brunch arranged for National Vegetarian Week in 2016, and, more recently, a series of cookery demonstrations. The cooking demos were supported by Todmorden Town Council to show and taste easy, healthy and affordable food preparation ideas.

Q: How does it all happen?

A: There is a core group of about a dozen volunteers who meet every two months. This group comprises a mix of newer and long-term vegans and benefits from a diversity of members. Between these meetings, sub-groups may lead in organising particular events or behind-the-scenes issues. It can be challenging at times to fit everything in, considering people’s other commitments, but we consistently receive positive feedback from attendees and supporters. 3 Valley Vegans operations depend on donations and occasional small grants.

Q: What other events do you appear at?

A: We have hosted information and food stalls at various events in Calderdale such as Blackshaw Head Village Fair, Mytholmroyd Food and Drink Festival and Todmorden Lamplighter Parade. These stalls are an effective way to reach out to people with various levels of interest in plant-based diets and animal-friendly living. We find that taste testers, local shopping guides and friendly faces go a long way at these events.

Q: How can I get involved?

A: If you want to come along and join the group, get in touch. Everyone is welcome to find out more about the choices they can make in any area of their lives to reduce animal suffering and reduce our negative impact on the environment.  If you are interested in volunteering with cooking, writing or even washing up, don’t hesitate to get in touch. We hope to hear from you soon!
