A new group to support and encourage a compassionate, cruelty-free, vegan lifestyle. We hold cooking sessions, tasting sessions, information sessions on everything from cruelty-free moisurisers to leather-free walking boots; vegan textiles to the best dairy-free cheese for cheese sauce!

Vegusto cheese is available at Valley Organics

Great news, Valley Organics in Hebden Bridge are now stocking Vegusto vegan cheese, a favourite with the group.

Victoria Sandwich cake

  • 270g plain flour
  • 50g cornflour
  • 300g sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste or 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 300ml soya milk or other non-dairy milk
  • 5 tbsp veg oil
  • 1tsp bicarb
  • 2tsp baking powder
  • 2tsp lemon juice

Sieve and combine the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.  Combine the wet ingredients in a separate jug.  Whisk lightly – the milk mixture will thicken slightly when you add the lemon juice.  Pour into the dry ingredients, stir lightly until well mixed (don’t over-mix).  Pour into sandwich tins and bake at 175deg until golden brown.

When cool, sandwich together with good jam and vegan buttercream

Sieve together the dry incredients.  Stir in the milk.  Leave to sit for 20 minutes, give a quick stir, and then you are ready to fry the pancakes.  Heat a frying pan, add a small amount of oil or margarine then add 2 tablespoons of batter.  Tilt pan to coat the bottom.  Fry until bubbles appear.  Flip, and fry for a further minute or so.

Women’s Day, Tod Town Hall, 22nd February

The IWD on Saturday was a roaring success. What began as a request to cater for the day, turned into a 3 Valley Vegans event !!

Between us all, we managed to promote veganism, raise some money for our group and the Mayor’s Charity and ensure that all food provided was vegan. Alison cooked all day Friday and Saturday and Helen valiantly made over 100 superb cakes ! Penny bought us lots of lovely Saker cake and Mary & Estelle decorated the cafe beautifully and served the food in their special tea party pinnies !

Elizabeth and Margaret did the full day on the stall and Rachel, Janet, Sandra, Caz & our lovely Isaac did their stints too. We raised over £400 on the hot food and cakes .. which will go to Overgate Hospice and a Women’s Refuge.

I think that it was a great way to launch our group and that we’ll go on from strength to strength showing the world (or at least the Upper Calder Valley!!) how a vegan lifestyle is the way to go!!
