Our animals are in danger. Under secretive new government plans, factory farm bosses would be put in charge of monitoring how well they treat their livestock. It would mean putting the protection of our sheep, cows and chickens in the hands of companies whose whole purpose is to make a profit out of them.
It’s like asking children to mark their own homework.
The government thought they could sneak past these changes on the quiet – and they’re planning to start dishing out powers to farming bosses in just a few weeks. [2, 3] But if we come together in huge numbers and prove how unpopular these plans are, we could push the government to back down – and give our animals the protection they deserve.
If you think animal welfare rules shouldn’t be left in the hands of factory farming bosses, add your name to the petition here. It’ll take less than a minute:

38 Degrees members stand up to companies when they try to put profit over basic decency. Cows, chicks and horses don’t have voices of their own – it’s down to us to speak up for them.
So when 38 Degrees member Cas heard the news about the animal welfare plans, she knew she had to start a campaign.
Here’s what Cas has to say:
“The meat industry has had many scandals over the years.
“Weakening regulations can only increase animal suffering – and impact the people consuming meat reared under poorer quality conditions.”Click here to sign the petition now:

Please sign this petition to help to stop the barbaric killing of baby foxes. ‘Cubbing’ starts in August and ends in November each year. In the name of hunting, young fox-cubs are used to train young hounds, in a reduced woodland with little to no chance of escape before being ripped apart. Underground holes – fox earths and badger setts – are blocked to prevent the cubs having a safe place to hide. If these poor creatures escape underground, ‘terrier-men’ are on hand to ensure that they dig out the fox-cub. Hunt followers surround the woods to ensure that any terrified fox-cubs trying to escape are ‘flushed out’ and scared back into the mouths of the pack of hounds.
There need to be much tighter controls on ensuring that the illegal act of ‘cubbing’ does not take place and strict sanctions for those whom aid and abet it. 80% of people in the United Kingdom are against hunting in the United Kingdom. Please sign this petition and demand that our government and Defra uphold the law against this cruel and outdated practice, so that ‘cubbing’ is consigned to the history books forever.
Ask your MP today to support efforts to prohibit the use of wild animals in circuses in England.
A new bill to ban wild animals in circuses in England is being presented on Wednesday 10 February 2016 and we need your urgent help if it is to have a chance of succeeding.
Please contact your MP and urge them to support Conservative MP Will Quince’s Ten Minute Rule Motion: Wild Animals in Circuses (Prohibition) Bill.
With no timetable set by the government to bring in the ban that was promised four years ago, we must seize this opportunity to stop the suffering once and for all.
We are determined to get the legislation promised the animals, and politicians, the public and animal experts are on our side. A similar bill championed by Animal Defenders International had overwhelming support but was blocked by just a few MPs. We can’t let this happen again.
Circuses are gearing up to go on the road again and the animals will be forced to perform for another year. We must stop this merry go round of suffering – and the threat of yet more wild animal acts. A new big cat circus is already poised to return to England, having been prevented from doing so last year due to the inadequate living conditions the lions and tigers were forced to endure.

From Avaaz: Yahoo – stop your deadly ivory trade!
The ivory trade is pushing elephants to the edge of extinction,and Yahoo is making a killing from trinket sales in Japan! But right now we have a chance to end this corporate complicity.
Several big brands like Google and Amazon are refusing to sellivory. Yahoo is one of the few major online markets left. But we could influence that decision. Right now Yahoo is losing some of its best employees, and the CEO is offering millions to convince people to stay. If we threaten to lift the lid on Yahoo’s bloody secret, she could lose staff even faster, and may reconsider the costs of this cruel trade.
100 elephants are being massacred a day, and their emotional intelligence means they understand the horror of what is happening to them. Let’s raise a million voices to protect these majestic creatures — Avaaz will run an advertising blitz and target Yahoo employees worldwide to demand change from the inside. Sign now and recruit others to join on Facebook, Twitter, and everywhere else!
From the Animal Aid website:
Please submit an objection to plans for a huge new chicken farm in Yorkshire, which could rear more than a million birds per year in cramped, filthy conditions, before sending them to a terrifying slaughterhouse death.
We conducted an undercover investigation at another farm run by H Barker and Son, the company applying to build the new ‘unit’. We uncovered distressing scenes of animal suffering, including birds with missing feathers and raw, sore-looking skin, birds with hock burns (caused by the filthy bedding) and birds collapsing under their excessive body weight. Outside the farm was a pile of dead chickens, left exposed to the open air.
Please help stop H Barker and Son from building a new chicken farm by submitting an objection to the plans, using this link. If you can take a moment to personalise the letter, then that will ensure it has maximum impact.
A recent publication from The Vegan Society includes the following.
Next Monday the Climate Change Conference will begin in Paris. This is a historic event. After two decades of United Nations negotiation, world leaders will gather to reach a legally binding and universal agreement aiming to avoid catastrophic climate change.
In the vegan community we all know that the so-called ‘livestock’ sector is responsible for the suffering of millions of animals. But it has also become a huge contributor to climate change, threatening the lives of non-human and human animals.
However, our government has done very little or almost nothing to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of this sector.
We cannot wait anymore. It is with this mind-set that we recently launched our new campaign, Grow Green. This initiative calls on the government to incentivise the UK production of plant protein crops for human consumption. How? By supporting UK farmers who are interested in transitioning from livestock farming to growing more local, sustainable crops. This could:
• Eliminate the suffering of millions of animals;
• Reduce the threat of climate change and food security;
• Encourage a more sustainable food chain in the UK and healthier food habits;
• Guarantee continuity of employment to young farmers in a climate change era.
We urgently need to ensure that your MP knows about Grow Green too. Please click on this link to send an email to your MP asking them to support this transition.
