Meet new people, learn some things and get free food; what more could you ask for from an evening out?
Healthy Eating on a Budget was the first 3 Vally Vegans event I have attended and I’m happy to say I’m sure to come back again.
The cookery demo had a variety of interesting dishes being prepared by Hillary, Kim, Rob and Sandy with each of them sharing their own insights into how to eat healthy while not spending a fortune.
The hosts presented great tasting vegan dishes such as mushroom risotto, vegetable stir fry and lentil dahl with plenty of useful hints and tips, even for those meat-eaters present who were looking to start ditching the dairy as well as helpful dietary guidance for the recently converted like myself. Even the vegan veterans in the audience got a few “I never knew that!” moments of culinary inspiration. Personally I was most tempted to try the homemade oat mylk (astonishingly easy) and frozen banana-based “nIce cream”, while other audience members were keen to start wild foraging for dandelions and lovage for their next salad. Free recipe cards and leaflets to take made it even easier to try out these new ideas at home.
With a welcoming and inclusive vibe, audience participation through sharing recipe tips and a great debate on how exactly do you pronounce “tabbouleh”, this evening was fun and informative and I look forward to the next event.
3VV have arranged for a group of us to visit the Pigs in the Wood pig sanctuary in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire. This is a sanctuary for pigs that promotes veganism and provides talks to schools and groups about pig welfare. The visit will involve meeting the pigs and observing them behaving naturally in their environment. We may be able to feed and or massage the pigs and have a walkabout in the woods with the pigs (if the pigs want to!). We’ll be provided with information about pig welfare and may even be able to have a picnic in the wood with the pigs (weather permitting).
It’s going to be (very) muddy so wear suitable footwear e.g. wellies. The sanctuary needs funding to keep going so there is a minimum donation of £5 for adults. Please bring a vegan lunch and drinks with you for our picnic.
We’re meeting at the sanctuary at 10.30 and will be going by car. We’d like to car share so if anyone is happy to drive then please let us know. We’ll be leaving Todmorden at 8.45 am. and Hebden at 9.00 am. If anyone would like to make their own way to the sanctuary the address is: Highbridge woods, Wakefield Rd, Scissett, HD8 8SZ.
See the
Pigs in the Wood Facebook page for more information about the sanctuary.
Thanks to Kim for the photos of the event, above, and Rob, below.
We met two new, shy but inquisitive pigs called Lottie and Dottie. They were very interested in meeting us but did not want to come too close. They have been given the opportunity to flourish somewhere they can feel safe. We have proudly adopted them and feel privileged to be able to help them settle in their new home.

Sunday 8th April circular walk,
Mytholmroyd to Cragg Vale. 7.5 Miles, 6 – 6½ hours.
Contact us if you wish to join.
Meet from 10.00 outside Mytholmroyd Station under the railway bridge on New Road opposite the Shoulder of Mutton pub, to depart at 10.15.

A medium to hard walk through the varied & characterful hill side woods of Cragg Vale. Sturdy, ideally waterproof, walking boots will be required, a walking pole could be useful.
For those not wanting to do the whole route, the 901 bus can be caught in Hebden Bridge or Mytholmroyd up to the Hinchcliffe Arms, which would reduce the walk by 3 miles/2 hours, joining the group just before the lunch stop. There is also the option of leaving the walk at that point and again at 3¾ miles after the the lunch stop, when we reach Cragg Vale road and pass a couple of bus stops for the 901.
The first half of the walk is more strenuous, though there are still several ascents/descents on the second half.
A 901 Bus Time Table is available.
