Global Vegan Festivals & Fairs List

Here is a big global vegan festivals and fairs list made by Roddy of Northern Vegan Festival, so please post it on your Facebooks, in case people want to go on holidays at the same time as these events. All events with vegetarian, veggie etc. in the name are fully vegan as far as we know.
It’s by far the biggest list online, hundreds of events on 6 continents, with raw food ones as well.

Help stop giant new chicken farm in Yorkshire

From the Animal Aid website:

HELP STOP GIANT NEW CHICKEN FARM IN YORKSHIRE

Chickens in a broilerPlease submit an objection to plans for a huge new chicken farm in Yorkshire, which could rear more than a million birds per year in cramped, filthy conditions, before sending them to a terrifying slaughterhouse death.

We conducted an undercover investigation at another farm run by H Barker and Son, the company applying to build the new ‘unit’. We uncovered distressing scenes of animal suffering, including birds with missing feathers and raw, sore-looking skin, birds with hock burns (caused by the filthy bedding) and birds collapsing under their excessive body weight. Outside the farm was a pile of dead chickens, left exposed to the open air.

Please help stop H Barker and Son from building a new chicken farm by submitting an objection to the plans, using this link. If you can take a moment to personalise the letter, then that will ensure it has maximum impact.

The Vegan Society: Tackle climage change and take action with Grow Green

A recent publication from The Vegan Society includes the following.

Next Monday the Climate Change Conference will begin in Paris. This is a historic event. After two decades of United Nations negotiation, world leaders will gather to reach a legally binding and universal agreement aiming to avoid catastrophic climate change.

In the vegan community we all know that the so-called ‘livestock’ sector is responsible for the suffering of millions of animals. But it has also become a huge contributor to climate change, threatening the lives of non-human and human animals.
However, our government has done very little or almost nothing to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions of this sector.
We cannot wait anymore. It is with this mind-set that we recently launched our new campaign, Grow Green. This initiative calls on the government to incentivise the UK production of plant protein crops for human consumption. How? By supporting UK farmers who are interested in transitioning from livestock farming to growing more local, sustainable crops. This could:

•    Eliminate the suffering of millions of animals;
•    Reduce the threat of climate change and food security;
•    Encourage a more sustainable food chain in the UK and healthier food habits;
•    Guarantee continuity of employment to young farmers in a climate change era.

We urgently need to ensure that your MP knows about Grow Green too. Please click on this link to send an email to your MP asking them to support this transition.

Petition: 6 rescue pigs losing their home

From Care2 Petitions, by Jaclyn Haggata:

We have now received an enforcement notice demanding we remove the pig shelter (stable), gates and access road – Making it impossible to look after the pigs and ensure their welfare.
After moving our 6 rescued pigs from a very un-suitable exposed field, for which we were charged an extortionate rent, we could not believe how lucky we were when we bought nine and a half acres of ancient, overgrown, un-managed woodland at an auction. …

GUEST POST: Vegan “butter”

Vegan butter recipe as asked for by a few people at the World Vegan Month party.

Vegan “Butter”

Vegan butterred toast by Emma
Emma’s vegan butter on toast, and (INSET) the original recipe from VeganBaking.net

A delicious light buttery taste and importantly it melts like butter on pasta or vegetables.   I couldn’t imagine asparagus without butter and sometimes olive oil is too plain or strong.   A bit of a faff for some people I should think.

Taken from www.veganbaking.net

  • 1/4cup +2tsp soya milk
  • 1/2tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2tsp coconut vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • 1/4+1/8tsp salt  (ie a pinch)
  • 1/2cup+2tbsp+1tsp (130g) refined coconut oil (melted and then cooled to room temperature)
  • 1tbsp canola or rice bran oil or light olive oil
  • 1tsp liquid soya lecithin,
  •      or 2 1/4 tsp soya lecithin granules
  • 1/4tsp xanthum gum
  •   or 1/2+1/8tsp psyllium husk powder

a)  Whisk together the soya milk, vinegars and salt and leave to stand until it has curdled.

b)  Measure melted coconut oil and the other oil into a food processor.   Add the soya milk mixture,  soya lecithin and xanthan gum.  Process for five minutes scraping down the sides half way through.

It needs to solidify as soon as possible after mixing for a smooth butter.

c)  Pour the mixture into a mould, eg  marg tub or large ice cube tray, and freeze for one hour until solidified.  Store for use in the fridge.
